UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, while additional clips show the main character exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
