The Actress Says Discussing Donald Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ Tearing the Country Apart
Lawrence has expressed that she believes it's no longer fitting to voice opinions against the Trump government, fearing it could exacerbate polarizing arguments and increase separation within the country.
‘I’m Unsure If It’s Wise’, Says Lawrence
Speaking with media, Lawrence commented, “Back in Trump’s initial term, I believed I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. But it’s become clear, through repeated campaigns, Hollywood stars fail to influence in any way on electoral choices.”
Lawrence added, “Why continue? I’m just expressing personal views on an issue that’s going to heighten conflict that’s ripping the country apart.”
Political Evolution
Lawrence has previously been open about backing right and leftwing presidential nominees throughout her life. Growing up with a right-leaning family in Kentucky, she voted for the Republican nominee in the 2008 election prior to switching to the left-leaning politics and revealing she realized during Obama’s administration that voting Republican was voting against her individual liberties as a female citizen.
Past Statements
In 2015, she commented that Trump winning the presidency would be “a catastrophic event” and publicly supported Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. More recently, she voiced her backing to Vice President Harris, “because I believe she’s an amazing candidate and I am confident that she will do whatever she can to protect reproductive rights.”
Industry Position
Lawrence was supported by many in the entertainment industry in her rejection of Trump as a returning figure, but the minimal impact celebrities have over the public choices was highlighted by the outcome.
“Another four years feels different,” commented Lawrence about his administration. “Because he made his plans clear. We were aware of his actions for the previous administration. He was very clear. And that’s what we chose.”
New Release
Lawrence is currently promoting Die, My Love, the filmmaker’s movie in which she stars as a young mom who deals with her emotional state in the countryside. Speaking at a press conference for the project in Venice, Lawrence spoke about Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “It’s frightening. It’s mortifying. What’s taking place is no less than a genocide and it’s awful.”
Wider Issues
Lawrence added by stating that she was saddened by “the disrespect in the discussions of American politics right now and how that is going to be normalised to the children today. It’s going to be standard to them that elected officials deceive.”
The actor aimed to shift outrage about the situation to leaders rather than entertainers. “Keep attention on who is responsible,” she advised, in what many took to be a nod to the then-recent pledge endorsed by numerous Hollywood professionals to boycott specific industry bodies.
Individual Insights
The actor, who earned critical acclaim at a young age for her performance in her breakout movie, is attracting awards attention for her performance in the new film. While the director has rejected the narrative being understood as one of maternal mental health issues and psychological distress, she revealed that she connected with aspects of her character’s journey after the birth of her youngest child, shortly after filming concluded.
“I felt anxiety about my child,” she said, “just picturing every potential danger, and then questioning everything that I was doing. I was seeing a therapist, but I got on a drug called Zurzuvae and I used it for 14 days and it really helped.”
Film Challenges
The actor also spoke about the empowering aspect of filming without clothes in the film while she was expecting and limited physically.
“It feels nice,” she remarked, regarding the need to cast off vanity. “I mean, I occasionally wonder where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between my work and that profession? But it isn’t a major concern.”
