Our team is checking images and video circulated earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
