Eurovision Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.
An new term came to light several months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, per insights from doctors such as child health specialists. Normally, it is rare for physicians to care for a child who has lost their entire family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about many doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.
A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that atrocities are continuing. Officials has denied these allegations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is accused of. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, it seems, is what international harmony resembles.
Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be treated differently.
Contradictory Principles
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that global media are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy
The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of someone in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. An institution that was originally built on peace has devolved into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
