Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his intention to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism
Just last month, Adams had publicly condemned the former governor, calling him a “snake and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a new development, Mayor Adams changed his position, stating he now plans to campaign alongside Cuomo in communities where he maintains significant backing.
“I think that it is imperative to mobilize the communities of color that have suffered from gentrification on how critical this race is,” Adams stated.
Adams continued, “They have watched their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been ignored in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”
Election Landscape and Current Developments
The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the struggle between the former governor and progressive candidate his main rival, whose increasing popularity has attracted attention globally and represented hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.
During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if extended.
Earlier this year, Adams had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dropped in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across New York City.
During a unrelated press conference on the same day, the mayor responded to journalists asking about the support announcement by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”
This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at Madison Square Garden, which occurred immediately following a heated candidate debate.
