Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Charity

Getting rid of unneeded presents can be viewed as a little discourteous – unless it's done the right way.

A Philanthropic Auction

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures during her travels. The diverse haul reportedly features objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

These items, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale to the highest bidder by a Italian art dealer. A date is yet to be set, although the goal is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the proceeds benefiting various charities.

Storage Room Treasures

The items reportedly locked away in a storage room on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. It has been reported that Meloni furthermore intending to auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust over a long period.

The full gift list has not yet been officially released, but partial details was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was reviewed by officials. The discussion centered on whether a statutory cap on gift value was being honored. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.

An International Array of Gifts

Notable gifts feature:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
  • A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from Moldova.
  • Various other items including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Maybe the most unusual gifts were the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Diplomatic Context

Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from international counterparts and making Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.

This charitable initiative symbolizes a distinct method to manage the diplomatic artifacts that build up during a leader's tenure.
